in the u.s. taxpayers pay the bill to pick up, house, and eventually euthanize orphaned pets, spending over 2 billion dollars a year in tax revenue to house and kill unwanted animals. also, over 2 million tax dollars were spent in eight counties in central north carolina to operate animal control centers, where 78% of the animal intake were destroyed.
according to the humane society of the united states of america, 70,000 puppies and kittens are born in the u.s. every day, compared to 10,000 people born daily. conclusion: there will never be enough homes for all the unwanted animals, even though 90% of the unwanted births are adoptable animals. taxpayers are spending over two billion dollars a year to house and destroy unwanted pets. over ten million animals are killed in the u.s. each year, one animal every 3.5 seconds. most of the animals surrendered to shelters and running at large are unaltered.
the only way to help this situation is for pet owners to be responsible and spay and neuter their animals, it is as simple as that. there are numerous low cost spay and neuter clinics all over the country, like
the companion animal clinic of the sandhills in southern pines, nc.
doing my part to battle this issue is important to me, however i realize it is just one of the problems we are faced with today. climate change, hunger, lack of clean water and sustainable farming, businesses and infrastructure, lack of equal rights and opportunities for education and health care affect people around the world daily.
food for thought... if it were possible to reduce the population of the entire world to 100 inhabitants, maintaining the proportions of people which currently exist in the world, it would be made up as follows:
57 asians
21 europeans
14 americans (north, central and south)
8 africans
52 would be women
48 men
70 non-white
30 white
89 would be heterosexual
11 homosexual
6 people would possess 59% of the world's wealth
80 would dwell in inhabitable housing
50 would suffer from malnutrition
1 would have a computer
1 (yes, just one) would have a university degree
and consider this: if you are more healthy than sick, you are luckier than a million people who will not see next week. if you never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of prison, the agony of torture, the pain of hunger, you are luckier than 500 million of the world's inhabitants.
if you have food in the fridge, clothes in your closet, a roof over your head, a place to sleep, then consider yourself richer than 75% of the world's inhabitants.
if you have money in the bank, a wallet or some loose change lying around somewhere, consider yourself among those with the best quality of life in the world.
back home.
